Don’t Just Copy. Be Better.

I’ve always been annoyed by people who abuse the term Industry Best Practice. People need to start asking WHY and don’t just copy what others do. It’s very easy to copy, but difficult to be better. To be better, we need extra effort, finding out the WHY.

Definition of Industry Best Practice by some people that I’ve met recently:

Industry Best Practice, noun: We’re too lazy to think of better ideas and if the big companies are doing it then it must be good.

I have a dream to be a design leader one day, but my chance might be zero if I never act like one. Followers just copy. Leaders make things better. “They change things,” a line from Apple’s The Crazy Ones ad says, when talking about the people who have changed the world. It’s gonna be a challenging path, most people are comfortable with status quo, but I don’t wanna spend my time becoming a follower. I wanna change things.

How to Speak So That People Want to Listen

Being able to design things is not enough if we can’t communicate it to others. How we speak matters. He shared about seven deadly sins of speaking (gossip, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, embroidery/exaggration, and dogmatism), and the positive way so our speech can be powerful and make a chance in the world – HAIL:

  • Honesty – be clear and straight.
  • Authenticity – be yourself.
  • Integrity – be your word.
  • Love – wish them well.

He also shared – not only what we say, but also the way we say matters. There are a few tools that can increase the power of our speaking: Continue reading

How to Stay Crazy Creative

One of my favorite copies of all time, Apple’s Think Different ad in 1997:

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

I personally think that if we want to stay crazy creative, we can’t just do our regular day job. We need to do some different things, getting different perspective of stuffs, keep learning + practicing, and connecting with different people. Continue reading
