When you have a discussion with a designer, pay attention to what he says when explaining his design rationale. If most of the time he says “That’s how the big one does it,” then you can expect to not have anything innovative for your own users. He’s designing for the other company, the big one, not yours. Steve Jobs said Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower,” and having a “me too” designer is a certain way to go into the follower path, you’ll never be a leader. Innovation is problem solving. Whose problem? Your own users, not the big one’s users. Is there any hope if you have a “me too” designer? Of course. Either he changes, learns and acts as a leader, or you find another passionate designer who’s willing to become a leader. Life is too good to be a follower.
