You Don’t Need A Manager Title to Become A Leader
First rule of leadership: everything is your fault. When I read that quote on 1001 Ways to Leadership book, I remembered one manager who did the opposite, everything is other people’s fault. It felt like it was the worst period of my career, but looking back, it’s good to experience a bad manager, then we can learn how to become a leader, not manager. It’s about leading, not managing. Guiding, not directing. Influence, not authority.
A leader is best when people barely know he exists. When his work is done, his aim is fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. -Lao Tzu
Not everyone would get a chance to become a manager, but anyone can be a leader. Quoting Lao Tzu, “A leader is best when people barely know he exists. When his work is done, his aim is fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” If you’re a UX Designer like me, pick one goal that would improve the experience of your product, aim for it, and influence (not manipulate) people to reach that goal. Becoming a leader would have a positive impact to your life. Your confidence increases, you’ll be happier, and you’re aiming beyond title – you have a better purpose in life. Make a tiny dent in the universe. Our time is limited. Don’t wait until you become a manager.
