To Add More is Human
It’s so true I can’t stop smiling. When people start adding more to an application or website, it’s not just about creating an illusion of adding value. It’s about the need of being important.
To add more is human. It’s good to have that kind of feeling, that everyone wants to add something-which they think it’s good, to the application. Somehow it shows that they care. You shouldn’t tell them “I’m the expert, I know what I’m doing!” Instead, let the design do the talk.
It has to be a win-win situation, because your goal and other people’s goal in the organization should be the same : to delight users.
How does it work? Adapt Apple’s design process : the 10-3-1.
Create 10 designs/mockups, then narrow the choices down to 3, until you got a winner. If you don’t have enough resource or time to create 10 mockups, at least create 3 of them, so you can compare the design, including the additional design from other people.
If your design is good, then it’s easy to be the winner. If not, other people will be happy because they contribute to the design, and you learn something important : No design is perfect. It’s a win-win situation. It has to be a win-win situation, because your goal and other people’s goal in the organization should be the same : to delight users. Money follows good (does’t have to be great) experience. Money follows good experience.
